leather repair and restoration

As leather ages it can lose some of it's original qualities, especially if it has been stored unused for a long period of time. Equally after long periods of use a little tlc can be needed.

Often the first things to show signs of age and use are straps and hinges. Items that have been left stored in a garage or loft for lengthy periods can have more serious problems.

Each piece is an individual, and it's repair or restoration* needs are equally unique. There is no point in trying to generalise about the care that is going to be needed. It may be as little as a gentle clean and feed, or a much more fundamental revitalisation.

* Sometimes it's a little difficult to differentiate between repair, restoration or conservation. I think of a repair as the correction of some physical damage in an item in fairly regular use; restoration as the rejuvenation of a leather item to create a useable object, and conservation as the protection of an item against future decay. However it's fair to say that the reality isn't always quite that straightforward and the lines get blurred.
